Best Thing to Take to a Party Other Than a Drink

When I was the person who had enough space to host my parties, I was always grateful for someone to bring something. When people asked what they could bring, I always answered “more booze” because I was in my 20s and the end of booze seemed to be on the verge of an apocalypse. But then I got bottles of shitty beer, shittier wine and (on one fateful night) dragonfruit vodka, wishing I had asked people to bring hotter or something.

Don’t get me wrong: booze is good, but at the end of the day, real heroes bring treats that soothe and delight drunken people. Comforting, nostalgic, light snacks and sweets that further distract the drunk from drinking are especially welcome, but these suggestions will be appreciated by even the most sober guest.

Chocolate Chip Cookies

Our own Melissa Kirsch swears by the power of chocolate chip cookies Entenmann , and I’m personally partial to the vat with small crunchy bois Trader Joe’s , but if you want to win the whole party, make Wilson Mara (known Matilda) and roll along with the cookie party, which is heated in the oven

Pizza rolls and the like

Cookbook author and fearless podcaster Laurie Woolever may be a genius, but she’s definitely, without a doubt, a great home guest. Not only does she appear with pizza rolls (which are always welcome), but bagels as well. I dare you name the duo more iconic.

La Croix (or some other flavored seltzer)

People talk a lot about La Croix lovers, but I would be half as dehydrated as I am without mildly flavored seltzer water. Bringing it to a party, as Nick Douglas suggests, benefits those who do not drink, as well as those who drink, as the former gives something to drink and hold, and the latter with something to restock.

Capri sun

It’s funny to watch adults stick a straw into a tiny hole, just like drinking from a soft bag. Also, like La Croix, this is another ethanol-free offering, which is never a bad thing.

Root beer fixing the float

Michelle Wu’s father-in-law brings beer and vanilla ice cream to every party he attends and is (rightfully) called a hero. If I were in charge of issuing medals, I would give this person two – one for my immense joy and one for reminding me to enjoy a lot of sandwiches – a truly underrated two-ingredient dessert.

What soft drinks do you want to bring to the party? I hope you don’t bring flowers . They are not only inedible, but also require attention, and most owners do not have much that is superfluous.
