I’ve only been to Churchill Downs once, and not to Derby. However, even though I was not aware of the event, I found myself stopping by the betting kiosks between races to invest a couple of dollars in a pony that looked the most promising (or had a better name, to be honest).
If you’re like me and want to play a little game by Saturday, you have several options:
Twin Spiers app
This year, Churchill Downs gives you the opportunity to place bets on the big race from anywhere using your phone.
To place a bet, download the Twin Spiers app and then follow the onscreen instructions to create an account. Simple registration will earn you $ 10 of “free” money and you can add more funds from your Paypal account, credit card, or MoneyGram or PayNearMe (available at 7-11 and FamilyDollar stores). If you are a major player and you are betting $ 500 within the first 30 days of using the app, it will give you a $ 100 credit.
The app does work on racetracks all over the country, so when it’s time to place your bets you’ll need to select Churchill Downs from the list of circuits. (And if it turns out that you really enjoy pony betting, you can use it for other races throughout the year.)

Tally
If you want to place a bet but don’t really want to put money on the card, the Tally app can be a great solution.
I started using the app during the Super Bowl earlier this year. With it, you can choose your favorite, as well as guess other things, such as what the winning time will be and whether the winning horse will be wearing an odd or even-numbered saddle.
In-app selections are free and the person with the most in-app points at the end of the race will win $ 50.
You can also create a private group with your friends in the app, where you compete against each other for bragging rights, drinks or money if you want.
