Learn High Valyrian From Game of Thrones With Duolingo Course

The popular language learning app Duolingo is taking advantage of the buzz surrounding Game of Thrones season 8 with an updated version of its High Valyrian course , which makes it easy for fans to learn one of the oldest languages in Westeros in a minimal amount of time.

High Valyrian was first added to Duolingo in 2017, but the new version adds expanded vocabulary, updated lessons, and even fully-voiced recordings and pronunciations. The course was created by linguist David Peterson, who also developed High Valyrian to the full language of the Game of Thrones TV show. Peterson also provided all of the recorded voice clips for the Duolingo course, so you can be sure everything is pronounced correctly.

How to start learning High Valyrian with Duolingo

  1. Install and open the Duolingo app ( Android , iOS , Windows )
  2. Tap the rate checkbox in the upper left corner, then tap add.
  3. Scroll all the way down and click Tall Valyrian.
  4. After the introduction to the course, you will begin your first lesson. Tap the speaker icon during lessons to hear spoken words and phrases.

The new version of the course includes 38 modules, each of which contains several small lessons covering all kinds of grammar and vocabulary topics. Anyone who has already started a course will automatically receive new course materials.

Like any Duolingo course, High Valyrian lessons are designed to be completed quickly, so you only need to spend a few minutes a day to make progress in your Targaryen language learning. Once you’ve mastered High Valyrian, you can switch to one of 33 other Duolingo languages, including Klingon , for those looking to expand their fantasy language repertoire. I personally hope that one day we will receive a course of Sindarin .
