Add Woodsy Cynar to Cola

Something and Cokes can hardly be called cocktails, but you can’t deny that they are delicious, especially when you pair cola with a complex, herbal liqueur like my good friend Cynar.

The cynar — which you remember from this or this or that — is an artichoke liqueur that doesn’t taste very much like artichokes. It’s a bit of a herbal quality, but all these herbs and other botanicals mean it looks more like a lush forest than a green garden. Paired with Coca-Cola – get the Mexican recipe if you can – you get a sweet and bitter, lightly refined carbonated beverage perfect to pair with pizza, takeout, or whatever else you want to shove in your face on Friday in the evening. Add bitters to complicate the flavor a little, and experiment with flavors to shift the profile one way or the other (both lime and chocolate bitters are good here). To prepare this drink you will need:

  • 1 1/2 ounce cinar
  • About 4 ounces of Coca-Cola
  • 3 drops of your favorite bitters, original or flavored

Add the cynar and cola to the ice-filled lowball and stir gently to combine. Add bitter, sip and repeat as needed.
