How to Use Swipe Controls to Control Your Gmail Inbox on IOS

Google announced that starting today, Gmail iOS will have swipe gesture controls that should soon be available to all Gmail users on iOS. While the update does not add any new commands to Gmail, it greatly simplifies quick inbox management by allowing users to customize swipe actions to the left or right.

For most people, an in-app notification should inform you that a new feature is available and provide a quick link that takes you to the settings menu, but you can also find it in your Gmail app settings by going to Settings> Swipe Actions . Then you can specify separate actions for scrolling left and right.

(These features are also available for Android Gmail users under Settings> General Settings> Swipe Actions. )

The options available include:

  • Archive (default action) – Archived messages can be found in the All Mail tab.
  • Delete – sends mail to the trash bin, where it is stored for 30 days, and then deleted irrevocably.
  • Mark as read / unread – swipe once to mark as read, swipe again to return to unread status.
  • Move To – You can specify a specific location or Inbox folder to send you messages.
  • Postpone – Temporarily removes the email from your mailbox. You can find the pending email on the Deferred tab.

You can also turn off the left or right swipe gesture by selecting None.

If you can’t find the swipe action setting, double check that you’ve updated to the latest version of the Gmail iOS app, otherwise the update is most likely not available to you yet. (According to Google, it may take up to 15 days to receive your w).
