How to Play Far Cry New Dawn in ‘Dad Mode’

Far Cry New Dawn , the newest game in the Far Cry open-world series from Ubisoft, takes place several years after the apocalyptic nuclear event that ended Far Cry 5 . Hope County, Montana is nearly destroyed, but a group of survivors wants to rebuild. Your task is to help them by collecting supplies, building the settlement of Prosperity and fighting evil robbers who terrorize the population.

Far Cry New Dawn can be played in dad mode (i.e. avoiding blatant violence in favor of more peaceful action in front of children), but it’s not easy. It is rated M, and unlike some open world games, violent confrontation is woven into every aspect of the gameplay. But if you don’t mind sometimes sending your kids out of the room to shoot some fools, this game has a ton of kid-friendly, non-violent activities.

Life-affirming post-apocalypse

The open world of New Dawn, created after the explosion of the bomb, is very lush. Unlike the grim, rubble-strewn cityscape of games like Fallout 4 , Hope County is bathed in sunshine and vibrant neon plants and flowers; obviously the bombs were good for flora and fauna.

There are no wandering zombies or super mutants here to bother you on your travels, so the general look of the game won’t hurt your kid with the crazy idea that things will suck after the nukes fall.

Constant confrontation

While the setting itself probably won’t bother impressionable youth, action can. In keeping with Far Cry’s “Crazy Shit Can Explode Any Minute” principle, enemies appear randomly, and they appear frequently. You cannot reason with them or even run away most of the time, so you must kill or be killed.

If you are playing with your child in the room, you will regularly scream “close your eyes” and aim for the mute button. Even after completing the game, completely refurbishing the settlement, and defeating the boss’s bad guys, Rogues still show up regularly to disturb your peace of mind (where do they even sleep?). On the other hand, the murders in the game are not too gruesome or bloody, except for the covert murders.

Fishing: Gamer Parents’ Friend Everywhere

The New Dawn fishing system is pretty simple. First, you earn a few skill points to get your fishing rod, then you submerge the rod in the water and start reeling it in. You don’t have to worry about bait, technique or rod improvement.

There are six types of fish to catch and you will receive an achievement or trophy for earning them. The fish can also be exchanged for valuable supplies, so there is a reason in the game to go down to the old fishing for a while.

Rogues, of course, don’t respect fishing and will randomly attack you while you fish. I have not found a place “safe” to fish even after the main game is over. So be careful.

Let’s go hunting

Apocalypse thrilled wildlife in New Dawn, but not terrifyingly, so if you don’t mind having your kids hunted in general, New Dawn’s animals are unlikely to be more disturbing than any others. video game mining.

To find hunting spots, you can either purchase a map from a vendor or simply explore Hope County where you will come across road signs pointing to the habitat of a variety of animals, including tough “monstrous” animals that are bullet-heavy but can be used to create more advanced weapons.

Much like its fishing system – and indeed the rest of the game – hunting in New Dawn is simplistic and simple: point your weapon at an animal and shoot it until it dies. Then collect the hide and exchange it for duct tape or gears to build vehicles and weapons. Unlike the hectic hunt in Red Dead Redemption , you don’t need to use the right weapons on specific animals, and you also don’t need to worry about getting a clean kill. You will still receive tradeable skins, unless you blow up the animals with a grenade, set them on fire or something.

There is a perk that boosts your hunting abilities and one of your companions is your best hunting friend. The forest dog marks enemies and animals, which makes hunting easier, so be sure to take this kindest boy with you. Alternatively, you can ride with Timber in your motorcycle’s sidecar, which is amazing as you can see in the screenshot above.

Treasure hunt

What kid doesn’t love treasure hunting? Various survivors and survivors left caches of supplies throughout the landscape before the bombs fell, and if you follow the clues and solve a few puzzles, you can pick them up.

There are ten treasures in total, each of which provides a ton of valuable crafting supplies. To find them, talk to the survivors or buy a map to find out the locations. You even get a trophy / achievement for solving them. But then again, sometimes the starting point of treasure quests is guarded by cruel thugs that you need to kill.

Take pictures

One of the first side missions in New Dawn begins with the discovery of a box containing nine photographs before the bomb. Your task is to find the place where each photo was taken. This is the kind of quest that you either complete during the missions, or completely ignore until you beat the game and want to get 100%. If you are at the latter camp, you can buy a card from a vendor, hop in a helicopter and cruise to each location with your child next to you, taking photos of Hope’s various attractions.

Hidden Music Players

Someone hid 10 music players in Hope County, and if you find them all, you’ll be rewarded with an achievement and new tunes to listen to on Survivor Radio as you navigate the post-apocalypse.

The good guys love old songs like Herman’s Hermit, and the bad guys love Run The Jewels-style hip-hop. (Tastes differ.) This is a great scavenger hunt for kids if you know about the bandits guarding many locations.

Rushing like crazy

It’s not an “official” activity, but driving around Hope County, punching trees, finding steep jumps and getting impressive shipwrecks is crazy fun, especially if you’ve built Mad Max -style reinforced cars.

Make sure you bring one of your companions with you. I recommend Nana, an elderly man who combines homespun wisdom and deadly sniper fire in equal measure. In the screenshot above, Nana and I are jumping over the canyon in our unicorn trike. This is how we do it.
