You Can File Tax Returns After April 15 in These Nine States

Nine state residents have some leeway when it comes to the April 15 US tax filing deadline.

To be clear: in most cases this is not for your federal tax return, but if you live in one of the following states, you have up to an additional month to file your state tax return.

“We recommend filing both federal and state returns at the same time – and as early as possible,” says Kiplinger . “Government revenues are usually ‘lumped’ with federal revenues, so it is usually easier to do both at the same time.” And you will probably get your return faster if you expect it.

As we said earlier, you should try to file your tax return as early as possible this year . But if you need to apply for an extension for any reason (including because you’re just putting it off), here are the deadlines:

Maine

Miners must file reports at both the state and federal levels by April 17, 2019 , as April 15 is Patriot Day, an official state holiday, and April 16 is Emancipation Day in Washington DC.

Massachusetts

Massachusetts taxpayers must also file state and federal taxes by April 17, as they also celebrate Patriot Day and benefit from celebrating DC Liberation Day.

Hawaii

Hawaiians can file state tax returns by April 22, 2019 , one week after the April 15 deadline.

Oklahoma

Paper tax returns in Oklahoma must be filed by April 15, 2019, but the electronic tax filing deadline is April 22 for state filing.
