Check Your Deafness for Tone
Developed by the Music Laboratory of the Department of Psychology at Harvard University, this amazingly challenging web game tests how well you can distinguish between pitches. Put on your headphones and judge as soon as possible whether some tones are higher or lower than others.
Just be prepared to disappoint yourself. I hit the 59th percentile and still feel like I somehow missed the music. But if you want to treat your tin ear better, check if you (or your audio system) can tell the difference between high bitrate music and low bitrate music . Because if you can’t, then you never have to pay for more expensive high quality music streaming services!
The Harvard site also allows you to take more culturally interesting quizzes in which you try to define the purpose of music from different cultures. (We suspect the tonal quiz will also help explore different cultures, which often use different tonal scales.) And if you’ve taken any other good online listening tests, share them so we can all really get mad at our own. ears.
