Make Crazy Strong Horseradish Vodka in Your Blender

Horseradish vodka is a tricky beast (if you love horseradish). The horseradish bite and burn obscures the alcohol bite and burn, which means your brain doesn’t really know how much you’re drinking. It’s dangerous, and it’s one of my favorite things.

The Portland restaurant Kachka bottles them and I’m a fan, but if you don’t live next to a horseradish supplier or just want to play with potency, you can easily do it with a blender. Just like our Lime Leaf Vodka , using a blender allows you to quickly get a clean, invigorating horseradish flavor. In fact, it is almost too effective. Since I’m not entirely right when it comes to this root, I went overboard with mine and created a sinus cleansing potion that I can’t stop drinking even though it hurts so much. (I should have stuck to my original ratio of 35 grams horseradish to 375 milliliters of vodka, which tasted very good, but I doubled it instead. That’s okay. I’m fine.) To make your own, you’ll need:

  • 375 milliliters of vodka
  • 35g fresh horseradish, peeled and cut into 1/4 ” coins
  • 2 teaspoons honey

Mix everything in a blender (the higher the power, the better), and beat until there are no noticeable horseradish chunks left.

Line up the funnel with the coffee filter and pour the vodka slurry back into the vodka bottle through it. Chill in the freezer until completely ice-cold, then have a martini, Bloody Mary, or just take a few shots. (If you have a cold, this is almost a cure.)
