Now Is the Best Time to Start Training.

If you have the slightest suspicion that you might want to get in shape for the new year – or indeed anytime – don’t wait until January. The best time to start working out in the gym is right now, when you have a place for yourself.

Technically “right now” is always the best time to start, but December is special. If you wait until January, the gyms will be overcrowded. For the first two weeks of the year, everyone thinks they’ve started an amazing new fitness habit … and then, by February, most of them had forgotten about it. Don’t make it hard for yourself by starting in a big rush. Classes will fill up, you will have to fight people over squat racks , and it will be difficult for you to really have fun. So start now.

In December, gym goers will skip after-work gift shopping and holiday parties on weekends when the weather is fine. They also don’t want to get out of warm beds in the morning. The squat rack will be free when you arrive. You will have a selection of treadmills. The gym will be your oyster.

You will have a month, give or take, before the rush. And this month is the perfect time frame to set a small goal and stick to it. Promise to go to the gym three times a week and you will have at least 12 workouts before the new year. Start with a 5K couch running plan and you’re halfway done by January.

Yes, December can be stressful and stressful, but remember that exercise helps our brains cope with stress . Mark your workouts on your calendar and keep these appointments with you.

Don’t worry about discounts, any gym or studio offering a special offer in January will also have sales throughout December. If they don’t offer, just ask.
