How to Support Victims of the Pittsburgh Synagogue Shooting

On Saturday morning, 11 members of the Tree of Life Synagogue in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, were killed in what the Anti-Defamation League describes as the deadliest attack on the Jewish community in US history. Here are groups you can donate to that offer help to the community.

GoFundMe

This GoFundMe campaign has a $ 1 million goal and is just over $ 600,000. According to the description, the money will go directly to the Tree of Life Synagogue, which communicates directly with GoFundMe through its certified charity campaign.

Muslims Unite at Pittsburgh Synagogue

Pennlive says the original goal of this fundraiser was $ 25,000, but now it is close to $ 130,000, with 9 days left until the end of the campaign.

“The American Muslim community is reaching out to help the victims of the shooting, whether they are injured victims or bereaved Jewish families,” the mission said in a statement.

Jewish Immigrant Aid Society (HIAS)

HIAS is an international non-profit organization that works to support all refugees, although they began by supporting Jewish communities in the late 1800s. According to The Cut, the shooter spoke negatively about HIAS on social media. HIAS gave the following statement about the shooting:

“There are no words to express how devastated we are by the events in Pittsburgh this morning. This loss is our loss, and we are thinking of the Tree of Life Congregation, our local partner Jewish Family and Community Services (JFCS) of Pittsburgh, the City of Pittsburgh and all those affected by this senseless act of violence. As we struggle to cope with this horrific tragedy, we pray that the American Jewish community and nation will find healing. ”

Anti-defamation league

The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) organizes Tree of Life pickets and fights anti-Semitism in the United States and abroad. They also work with law enforcement in training on “extremism, terrorism, hate crimes and building confidence with the people they serve.”

March for our lives

If you’re making a donation, consider sending money to March For Our Lives , founded by students in Parkland, Florida, after 17 people were killed in a mass shooting. The group raises money to fund research on gun violence, advocates for universal background checks, and develops intervention programs.

Learn about anti-Semitism

Anti-Semitism and domestic terrorism are on the rise. Quartz offers to explore the history of violence against the Jewish community and its revival under President Donald Trump. They recommend the book (((Semitism))): Being Jewish in America in the Trump Era by Jonathan Weisman, or participating in projects such as Crash Override , which “defends and supports the goals of bigotry, racism, sexism, and other forms of violence” … hate on social networks. ” You can also follow the South Poverty Law Center , a nonprofit organization that monitors domestic hate groups and other extremists.
