Ann Lamotte Improves Our Lives

Anne Lamotte is a progressive politician and writer, author of bestselling books such as Bird by Bird , Journey of Mercy , Operating Instructions , Plan B, and her latest book, Nearly Everything: Notes on Hope . We are such fans of Anne Lamotte that we decided to dedicate an entire episode of The Upgrade to her. We talk with Anna about almost everything, including but not limited to: how to work with the news cycle; compassion for our little failures in the face of big tragedies; how help can be a form of control; comparing our insides with the outside world of other people; and the horrors of visiting DMV.

In which Alice and Melissa discuss why Anne Lamotte means so much to them.

Interview (4:47 – 30:10)

We learn that Anne Lamotte loves to cuddle. But that’s not all we are talking about! Also discussed were: her faith, the collective mental state of the public attending her book tour, coming to terms with the dire news while continuing to live her life; how the practice of recovery helps her cope with the sometimes “toxic” state of mind; what gives her hope; how each of her books is a love letter to specific people; how often snatch wins … and much, much more.

Person, place, thing (31:22 – 35:56)

We ask Anne Lamotte three questions: who had the greatest influence on her, what she feels most of all, and what she cannot live without.

Update of the week (36:05 – 40:38)

Every week we discuss one tiny thing that matters a lot in our lives. This week we will discuss the difference a night guard makes; Anna’s growing technological competence ( her son hardly has to help her anymore); and the simple joys of a large water bottle at work.
