How to Get the Best Dynamic Desktop Wallpaper for Windows 10

Windows: While you may be tied to your desktop wallpaper – whether it’s a picture of your family, your favorite internet pet, or whatever else is awesome – there’s no reason you can’t add a little variety every day. All of these Apple fans can get macOS Mojave dynamic wallpapers, but you can do more on Windows with a fun little utility called Chameleon.

With Chameleon, you can automatically change your desktop background to suit a lot more variables like weather, time of day, or your PC’s battery life. This is much better than the standard Windows handling for “dynamic” wallpapers: a slideshow that moves across different wallpapers at different intervals. Fur.

When you download Chameleon (which works with 32- and 64-bit Windows up to Vista), download its wallpaper pack , unzip the wallpaper pack into the same folder as the executable, and launch the application. First you need to click the “Settings” button in the upper right corner. Select your state, province or territory, and then select a local weather station – probably the closest airport to where you live. Click “OK” and you should see the current weather conditions.

When you return to the Chameleon home screen, you can choose from seven different variables that the application should use to change the wallpaper:

  • Your device’s battery life
  • Time
  • Local weather conditions (cloudy, clear, smoke, hail, etc.)
  • Wind speed
  • Temperature
  • Humidity
  • Heat index

Since you’ve also downloaded and unzipped the app’s wallpaper pack, there should already be multiple (4K) wallpaper images associated with each variable. You can replace any of them by simply clicking “Select Image” under any conditions. Before hitting “Run” to launch Chameleon, make sure you choose a reasonable refresh period – how often the app should check the terms and change the wallpaper if necessary.

The only drawback of the current implementation of the application is that you cannot configure it to start at Windows startup through the application itself. You will need to create a shortcut for the application and place it in your operating system’s startup folder.
