How to Successfully Delegate Work to Someone Else
When you fulfill many different work-related commitments, delegating tasks can be a key component in keeping you sane and getting all tasks done on time. Not everyone can do all of this, and the right help can be invaluable. However, there is a right and wrong way to delegate things. An entrepreneurrecently reviewed some tips on how to properly delegate business. Here are some of his suggestions and a few of my own.
Choose the right person
I have worked in many places where work was delegated based on seniority rather than who would do the job best. Before delegating a task, consider who on your team has the skills required to complete the task. Maybe this person is a senior employee, or maybe he is a new employee. The key point here is the appointment of TASS on the basis of a person, not his position.
If the task does not need to be completed as soon as possible, consider having another person work with the person who is best suited for the role. The next time you need to do something like this, you may have two qualified people to choose from.
Be specific
In translation, things get lost easily when you transfer them. When communicating your needs, try to be as specific as possible so that the person completing the task knows what you want and can get it right the first time.
Set a deadline
Even if you don’t have a specific “deadline” for a delegated task, come up with an arbitrary deadline that you give someone when you first hand over responsibility. A reasonable deadline can ensure that the task is not forgotten and will give you a good idea of when you can expect the work to complete.
Provide feedback
Whenever you delegate a task, be sure to provide feedback to the person who completed it after it is completed. This means: positive feedback on a job well done and constructive criticism of the job in which a little more love could be shown. Positive feedback will encourage the person to do good work again in the future, and constructive criticism will help iron out any nuances that arise.
