This Exquisite Cuba Libre Is so Much Better Than the Rum and Coca-Cola of Your College Days

Happy weekend and welcome back to Happy 3 Ingredient Hour , a weekly drinks column featuring very simple yet delicious libations. This week, we’re making the drink that gave me my first really bad hangover in college: rum and cola.

In fact this is not true. While we will be mixing rum with a Coco-Cola product, we will not repeat the rum and Coke situation that caused me to yell loudly at the boy I kissed with just a few weeks ago. No, we’re not mixing Captain Morgan Spiced Rum with Diet Coke. (Aspartame doesn’t mix well with alcohol in my opinion.) We’ll stir Cuba Libre, made with light rum, Mexican cola for real sugar chatter, and a nice little lime. The resulting drink is sweet but not sugary and very refreshing and can be prepared right in the glass. To make it yourself, you will need:

  • 1/2 lime
  • 1 1/2 ounce light rum
  • 3 ounces Mexican Coca-Cola

Squeeze half of the lime into a glass and toss there. Add a healthy handful of ice, rum and cola and stir a little. Drink, enjoy, repeat (responsible number of times).
