How to Switch Between Google Maps and Apple Maps in IOS

Usually, people pick one mapping app for their phones and stick with it, but there are times when you might need to run another app on your iPhone – perhaps you need to CarPlay your directions instead of having the Google Assistant shout them out.

Neither Apple nor Google have provided users with a built-in option to quickly import data from one app to another, please understand. And while you can always copy the address into one app and hope Siri will “suggest” it as a searchable location in another, or simply paste it in manually, there are several other ways to switch between the two platforms. For example, if you want to use one app for routes that use toll roads and another for routes without them, you need to switch between them on the fly.

How to switch from Apple Maps to Google Maps (or vice versa)

One easy way to open a location in Apple Maps and display it in Google Maps (or vice versa) is to buy the Opener app ($ 2). You can use it not only to quickly forward addresses between your mapping applications, but also to open links from your web browser directly in the respective applications.

To use Opener to move map apps, first install the app on your iOS device. Then open Apple Maps. Enter the address, click the result that appears, and then click the Share button. Then select Opener next to the Copy option and select Google Maps as your destination. This will then load the “other” mapping application with the address you submitted in the center.

If you don’t see Opener after clicking the Share button, you may have to swipe left until you see the More button. Click on that, enable Opener and try again.

Follow the same process to move an address from Google Maps to Apple Maps. In Google Maps, enter your desired destination and drag it up in the information section at the bottom of the screen until you see the Share button. Select it, select Opener, and then select Apple Maps.

Control one mapping app on Mac and another on iOS

You can of course use Apple Maps and Google Maps on a Mac, and perhaps you prefer one app on your desktop over another on your phone. Luckily, with iCloud and the Notes app, you can get both.

If you’re a fan of Apple Maps on your Mac, select the location you want and click the info button in the top right corner. Then click the Notes icon and save the note to iCloud. Open iCloud on your phone, select a note, hold your finger on the card, and tap Share. Then you can use Opener to import the location into Google Maps.

You can also use the same trick to switch from Google Maps to Apple Maps. Just select the location you want, click Share and you will be provided with a link. Paste the link into Notes, select it on your phone, and use Opener to navigate to Apple Maps instead.

If only you could set the default mapping app on iOS …

Jailbreak your iPhone and you can set Google Maps as your default navigation tool by installing MapsOpener . The free software uses Google Maps by default when you click any links on the map, including those that lead directly to the Apple Maps website.

Although MapsOpener only officially supports iOS 10, users have reported that it works great with Electra jailbreak for iOS 11.2 – iOS 11.3.1.
