How to Watch Free Content on the Roku Channel Without Roku

Surprise! You no longer need a Roku device or TV to watch tons of free movies and shows with ads. Roku brought ” The Roku Channel ” online this week, and you can watch it for free in your favorite browser (or select Samsung TVs).

Roku originally launched the channel last September to stand out from competitors like Apple TV and Chromecast. The service is now a decent way to check out several cinematic gems, several live TV shows, and a limitless supply of Category B (or worse) films. Oh yes, Madonna. You can also watch the entire 1991 documentary Truth or Dare if that’s what you think of Friday night.

The channel’s content includes films from entertainment companies such as MGM, Lionsgate and Paramount, to name just a few. You’ll also find links to live TV shows, including ABC News, Cheddar, and People TV, as well as a variety of on-demand shows that span a huge range of interests and time periods: everything from Kitchen Nightmares and Hell’s Kitchen; geeky shows that never went beyond a single season, such as The Quest for Pop Culture by Mark Hamill ; to classics like Bonanza and I Dream of Jeannie .

These films are not the latest blockbusters either, but they are also not a complete flop. Some of the options I found after a quick inspection include A Nightmare on Elm Street, School of Rock, Finding Bobby Fischer, and The Matrix . Check out the full selection here .

To watch anything, all you need to do is sign up to the site and get a free Roku account. It is so simple. While you probably won’t give up on Netflix or Hulu, or cut the cord based on Roku’s offerings, the service has some pretty good free content worth checking out.
