Freeze Bitters in Ice Cubes for a Drink That Develops

Bitters are basically the spice in the cocktail world, and just a few drops or drops can complete the drink or add a little depth to it. Throwing them straight into a glass is okay (obviously), but freezing some of the gentian-infused liquid into a large cube will give you a drink that gets a little special when you drink it.

According to renowned cocktail researcher Camper English, “Some people freeze the bitters in their ice cubes for a delayed effect,” which gives the drink a little more flavor as it gets diluted. This is especially good for simple, two-ingredient drinks that can become subtle when you enjoy them. Classic Angostura bitters are good, but don’t sleep on oranges, which seem more appropriate in the summer months. Simply grab your favorite ice cube tray, add four or five dashes to each well, fill with water and freeze as usual. Add aromatic cubes to cocktails, lemonade, or even iced coffee.
