What’s in Store for and Out of Netflix in the Week of July 16, 2018

Netflix is mysteriously silent about New Zealand journalist and director David Farrier’s new documentary series, Dark Tourist (July 20). Farrier has made a name for himself in the US by exploring the disturbing corners of the Internet – watch his thrilling 2016 documentary Itchy , and this eerie study of children exploited on YouTube.

Netflix finally released a trailer for the series last week, and it looks as weird as I hoped. The trailer defines “dark tourism” as “a global phenomenon in which people choose to vacation in places associated with death and destruction” – places like Kazakhstan, Columbia and … Milwaukee? We see Farrier doing the Pablo Escobar Tour, visiting a place where radiation levels are “higher than in the Chernobyl region,” and dodging bullets in the war zone. This couldn’t be more depressing than the second season of The Handmaid’s Tale , right?
