How to Snooze Topics on Facebook

We all have a few topics that appear regularly in our Facebook news feed that we would rather not see. Maybe you’re trying to avoid the details of the FIFA World Cup until you get home to watch the morning game on your DVR, or you’ve finally hit your limit in political conversation and want to pretend Trump doesn’t exist for the day. Whatever the reason, you can now turn off these themes thanks to a new Facebook feature called Keyword Snooze.

Exactly what it sounds like, this feature gives you the ability to temporarily snooze messages containing a keyword of your choice. When you set up snooze, you will not see any messages from individuals or groups containing the word for 30 days. They will still show up for you on these people’s pages, so you will need to look carefully if you are trying to avoid spoilers, but this will at least keep your newsfeed safe.

To use this feature, click on the three buttons in the upper right corner of a message similar to the one you are trying to avoid. A pop-up window appears with options such as Save Post, Hide Post, and Unsubscribe. At the bottom you will see “Defer keywords in this post.” Click on this to start the process.

At the moment, the ability to postpone keywords is available exclusively through the mobile application of the social network. However, a Facebook spokesperson told us that if you choose to defer a keyword on a mobile device, it will also be deferred on the company’s desktop version.

Facebook is gradually rolling out this feature to users and getting feedback along the way. If you launch the app and don’t see it as an option, make sure you have the latest version of Facebook downloaded to your phone. If after that you still come back empty, give it a few hours / days and you should be fine.
