Why AMC Stubs a-List Is a Viable Alternative to MoviePass
News broke last week that AMC Theaters will be offering their own movie subscription program to compete with MoviePass and Sinemia. Today the Stubs A-List service is up and running, offering three screenings of AMC movies (of any type) per week for $ 20 per month.
AMC Stubs itself is not new. The standard Stubs loyalty rewards program has been around for a while, giving AMC loyal customers free large popcorn top-ups, cheap movie tickets on Tuesdays, and the opportunity to earn points on discounted movie tickets. There is now a new paid Stubs tier that lets you watch multiple movies per week, like MoviePass: Stubs A-List . Here are the details you need to know:
- It costs $ 19.95 plus taxes every month.
- You can watch three films every week at any AMC theater (and only AMC theaters). This can be three sessions in a week, three films in one day, three views of the same film, or three views of the same film in one day.
- All types of films are available, including IMAX, Dolby Cinema, RealD 3D, digital and others.
- You can book tickets in advance without going to the theater.
- There are no blackout dates. If there is a show at the AMC cinema, you can watch it (provided it is not out of print).
- The view cap resets every Friday morning.
- Movies are not transferred every week. No banking films in the first half of the month, to watch a movie in the second half of the day.
- You also receive the same rewards as standard subscription rewards. This means you can watch three movies a week with three free popcorn additions.
It costs nothing, when you subscribe to the A-List, you must commit to at least three months of service. But when you sign up, it only charges you for the first month, and signing up for those three months binds you to $ 20 per month for the next 12 months. If prices jump next year, you still only have to pay $ 20 per month. For those who usually watch movies at the AMC cinema (which is highly likely as they are the largest network in the country), Stubs A-List is a solid deal that could easily take the place of MoviePass as a movie subscription service.
AMC claims this subscription program is more sustainable than MoviePass, which currently offers a movie a day in almost any theater for $ 10. MoviePass is currently undergoing some changes in the hopes of becoming more resilient – skyrocketing prices, being able to invite a friend, adding premium impressions, and more – but only time will tell how long they last. Survey data shows that MoviePass customers only watch six films in six months more than they did before using the service, so the temptation to watch a movie every day may no longer be enough.
