Join Our Summer Book Club

One of my goals for 2018 is to broaden my reading horizons. I read a lot of fresh fiction (actually, when I’m not at work, I mostly read fiction exclusively), but I would like to give other genres a chance.

And what could be better than being held publicly accountable? This is one of my projects this summer. Over the next three months, I will be hosting a virtual book club here on Lifehacker. I will accept your suggestions, choose a new book for June, July and August, and those who want to join me – whether because you also want to read more, or because you are looking for a group to discuss interesting books – will be welcome. to comment and share your thoughts for a month.

Ok, here are the rules of our club:

  • I write about personal finance, but it’s not limited to personal finance / investment books.
  • The book should teach us something. After all, this is a Lifehacker. So, don’t read on the beach, please (sorry!).
  • However, let’s stay away from self-help books. I think of books like So You Wanna Talk About the Race by Ijeoma Oluo, How to Change Your Mind by Michael Pollan or Ask the Manager by Alison Green.
  • No boring books! I mean, no academic writing. We have to learn something, but I don’t want to get bogged down in jargon.
  • I would like it to be as accessible as possible. This means no judgment and literary nose-pinching. This is for fun!
  • We’ll repeat this in July and August and see what happens next.

So what would you like to read? I’ll be taking suggestions in the comments over the weekend and will be announcing the book on Monday. We will then create a timeline to discuss later this month and add more reading-related material over the next few weeks.

I’ll be running the club here on the blog, but I’m much more interested in what you all have to say. Feel free to add comments here or email me within a month with your thoughts, questions, and any additional reading recommendations (please remember, anything you email me could potentially end up in the next post): alicia.adamczyk @ lifehacker.com .
