How to Convert Your IPhone HEIC Images on Windows Easily
Windows: Here’s the problem: The HEIF image format, which Apple now uses in iOS 11 as HEIC files , is a great alternative to JPEG. HEIC images take up less space and support many advanced features such as depth maps and 16-bit color. Great. Wonderful.
However, depending on how you transfer your photos from your iPhone to Windows, you might get stuck with a ton of HEIC that your favorite photo editing tool can’t handle (or your favorite website can’t accept both downloads. or … you get the idea.)
There are many online tools that you can use to convert HEIC files to standard JPG images. However, I am a little nervous about submitting a ton of images to some random website. First, I have no idea what these sites are doing with the photos I upload. Secondly, my photos may be too large to process. And third, well, some photos just shouldn’t be passed on to random strangers – like the picture you just took in your passport because you’re a smart traveler getting ready for your big vacation. I don’t even like putting this on Google Photos, let alone some strange person’s file conversion site.

If you need to convert HEIC to a different file format, I recommend taking this tiny utility: iMazing HEIC Converter . It’s free, works offline (obviously), and it’s an easy way to convert your HEIC files to JPG or PNG. While I wish you could start the conversion directly from the right-click context menu in Windows Explorer, it’s not that hard to open the utility and drag and drop the HEIC files. You can also open the contents of the entire directory from the application’s File menu, making it even easier to batch convert multiple photos at once.
Before converting images, you can adjust the quality of the JPG files generated by the utility. (Converting to a PNG file makes this option gray, naturally.) I also like that you can choose to remove EXIF data from your photo – a useful little hint of privacy concerns if you plan on sharing your JPG or PNG with others.
Once you’ve set up these few options, you just hit the big Convert button and wait a bit. While I would also be pleased if there was a way in the app to automatically delete your old HEIC files after converting them, this is a bit of a problem given the utility’s usefulness – at least until HEIC gets wider support, well, all .
