How to Draw Like a Cartoonist From New York

When all you know is stick figures, drawing seems like a mystical power. How do you start learning at all? New York City cartoonist Jason Katzenstein shows you how in this video session.

My drawing ability is below vocabulary level, so I was nervous when I sat down with Jason. As you will see in the video, he walked me through some drawing exercises in which we drew ourselves over and over. Throughout the process, Jason emphasized the importance of gesture drawing that focuses on the entire form rather than fussing over details too quickly.

My first attempt was terrible: a full figure. But towards the end I managed to cross out what you see in the thumbnail above. Nobody would mistake it for a professional drawing, but this is the best drawing I have drawn since elementary school. I bet I could, without much notice, shove it into a freshman art critic’s rejection pile.
