Use This Modified Google Search Url to Avoid Spoilers

Sorry, Chaim Gartenberg. The Verge reporter recently took a harsh lesson about the power of Google’s autocomplete feature when he attempted an innocent search for a character from a brand new God of War game. Bam! Spoiler, right there in the autocomplete field. He didn’t even get to the results (spoiler-filled).

He’s not the only one. If you haven’t seen Star Wars: The Last Jedi , don’t search for Luke Skywalker in your Google search box. And we recommend avoiding any character names, for example at the start of a new season of Game of Thrones or the Westworld finale on June 24th.

In fact, for whatever media you’re interested in, Google’s autocomplete feature is a potential spoiler minefield, even if you’re just looking for more information about your favorite show or game and do your best to avoid spoilers. Let’s fix this.

The url that keeps Google from messing up your shows

If you are afraid that Google will spoil the important point of something that you care about, something that you still have to experience, stop entering your queries on google.com. Use this URL instead: https://www.google.com/webhp?complete=0

This link should block Google’s autocomplete feature from displaying on its main search page. Fair warning: this doesn’t always work if you’re on the search results page, so be careful with Google follow-up. I’ve tested it in the latest versions of Chrome and Firefox and haven’t noticed any random spoiler pop-ups – or anything at all – when running regular google search.

Of course, you can also just type your search term directly into Chrome’s address bar. You will probably still be messed with Google search results if you try to find something (or someone) related to a key point of a show, movie, game, or book, but at least autocomplete won’t show up and screw up for you the secret even before you finish your quest.
