Happy Hour With Three Ingredients: Tangle-Free Artificial Grain

Happy Friday my friends and welcome back to Happy Hour with 3 Ingredients , a weekly drinks column featuring super simple yet delicious libations. This week, we’re bringing you a simple and rational take on a mint mojito.

One of the great things about being aregular cocktail visitor is that I can sample a lot of “trial” drinks, which works great for both my wallet and this column. So when Jason (the one who looks like Ryan Gosling) asked me if I wanted to try the “no confusion mojito” he was working on, I replied, “Yes, yes.”

Rather than using a whole bunch of mint leaves and sugar, Jason’s drink gets both its sweetness and invigorating minty scent from Branca Copa, Fernet’s more approachable cousin. Jason refills with soda for a truer mojito experience, but that would allow us to choose four ingredients, so we adjusted the proportions a bit to make a drink that sits somewhere between mojito and daiquiri, which is delicious . To make it you will need:

  • 1 1/2 oz Menta Branca
  • 1 ounce white rum
  • 3/4 oz fresh lime juice

Add everything to a shaker filled with ice and shake vigorously until the shaker is cold. Strain into your compartment glass and enjoy the fact that you don’t have to mix a single mint leaf. If you still feel like adding some soda water, reduce the amount of lime to half an ounce, strain into a Collins glass filled with ice, and fill with the indicated water.
