Wikivoyage – Travel Guide Around the World

Every week on Hack Your City , when I ask Lifehacker readers for travel tips, I try to add a little local flavor. So I check Wikivoyage , a travel wiki that looks even more like a real Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy than Wikipedia.

When you’re exploring travel, Wikivoyage is a great place to start. You will better feel the atmosphere of the place from the Wikivoyage dialog pages than from the dry encyclopedic text of Wikipedia. Wikivoyage members are allowed to insert opinions; they just have to be “honest.”

So where on the Wikipedia page about Park Slope it says:

Gentrification accelerated in the 1980s and 1990s, when working-class families tended to be replaced by people from the upper middle class, with prices no higher than Manhattan or Brooklyn Heights.

The Wikivoyage page says:

The crowd of people eating transplants can make you nauseous and nostalgic for crackers.

Wikivoyage pages include listings of attractions, restaurants, bars, hotels, attractions, as well as sections such as Understanding, which describes the history of the location and je ne sais quoi , and Stay Safe, which tells where to beware of pickpockets. or fraud or other dangers. City pages, like Brooklyn’s page , break down neighborhoods and boroughs. There are also directions from major airports, trains and highways.

For your information, there is a very similar site called Wikitravel . In 2013, many Wikitravel users resented the site, which ran ads but had weaker technical support, and moved their content to Wikivoyage, which is non-commercial and contains no ads. Here’s a side of the Wikivoyage story . (Wikitravel never mentions Wikivoyage.) Since then, Wikivoyage has expanded and received more edits. And if something is missing, you can add.

So don’t panic .
