Use Daylight Saving Time to Change One Habit
Whether we jump forward or fall backward, a two-year time shift is discouraging at best, but changing clocks also gives us a ready opportunity to change ourselves.
You already know that shifting your entire schedule by an hour upsets many of your normal rhythms and routines. This gives you the opportunity to kick out one bad habit and replace it with something better. It already seems unusual today, doesn’t it? Why not use that as a motivator to try something new?
Three habits you can change today:
Since your biological clock is already protesting against the change in time, it is best to go to bed tonight. Then make it your new bedtime tomorrow night. And the next night after that.
Since your meals are no longer scheduled, make one positive dietary change. Maybe you can eat a fruit instead of a chocolate bar for an afternoon snack. You may want to eat more protein and fibrous vegetables for lunch to avoid snacking altogether.
Since you will get an extra hour of daylight, make a commitment to add 15-30 minutes of exercise to your day. Maybe you can do 15 minutes of bodyweight exercise or 30 minutes of walking. Maybe the extra light will encourage you to walk into the gym and grab one of these exercise bikes by the window, or get on a real bike and go for a walk.
