How to Turn Off Facebook Face Recognition

If you’ve logged into Facebook in the past few days, you’ve probably seen a post on the social network about the expansion of facial recognition features.

The notice coincides with a court order against Facebook earlier this week in Illinois, which ruled that the social network is linked to the state’s Biometric Privacy Act, which requires both notice and consent before biometric information can be obtained from an Illinois resident.

It’s also a good reminder that Facebook collects biometrics about you and you can opt-out.

To turn off facial recognition on your computer, click the down arrow at the top of any Facebook page and select Settings. From there, click on “Face Recognition” in the left column and then click on “Do you want Facebook to recognize you in your photos and videos?” Select Yes or No depending on your personal preference.

On a mobile device, tap the three dots below your profile picture labeled “More”, then select “View Privacy Shortcuts”, then “Advanced Settings” and then “Face Recognition.” Click “Want Facebook to recognize you in your photos and videos?” and select “No” to disable this feature.

This option is not available in all countries and will only appear as an option on your profile if you are at least 18 years of age and have access to this feature.
