Get Big Discounts by Changing Your Address Before Moving

Moving is expensive. Aside from figuring out what you’re going to pack all your belongings in and whether you’re jumping for movers or pizza and beer for your friends, moving to a new location will always cost you more than you expect when it comes to basic household items.

Your new location may require more curtains than in the past, or now, when moving from a studio apartment to a 1-bedroom apartment, you need things like a sofa or dining table.

There is an easy way to get a discount on many of these things: change your address at the post office. As Travel + Leisure noted this week, a simple action often brings you a ton of great deals.

For example, in October last year, my boyfriend and I moved to a new apartment. Until the end of the month, I had an old apartment, but I changed my mailing address and started forwarding mail to my new apartment in the middle of the month, when it officially became ours.

On a basic level, it gave me a little peace of mind when it came to my mail. Within two weeks, I was getting all the mail that somehow wasn’t being forwarded to our new apartment, which, let’s face it, would probably have been dropped by the next tenant.

As soon as you change your internet address, you also get digital coupons and they are pretty good.

We got 20% off coupons on Bed Bath & Beyond, Lowes and every Blue Apron style meal on the planet. We also got a bunch of Whole Foods coupons (that was a long time ago, but I seem to remember the $ 15 off on a $ 50 purchase) as well as free Whole Foods groceries like olive oil and reusable bags – Whole Foods even gave us another $ 10 free item coupon to “break our new kitchen” when we used the coupons they sent us in the mail. There have also been huge discounts on mattresses and furniture at a variety of locations, from IKEA to Crate and Barrel, many of which came in the mail with a “Welcome to the neighborhood” mark.

Because we changed our address prior to our official move and not after we were able to take advantage of some of the deals that we might not otherwise have done. A discount coupon for a mattress is great, but if it’s delivered to you before the coupon arrives, it’s useless.

The fortnight buffer was perfect for both collecting random mail and receiving coupons, and it made the move much cheaper than if we ended up buying it all at full price.
