How to Open Chrome Links Using the Keyboard

We wrote about Vimium , a Chrome extension that adds custom keyboard shortcuts, back in 2010 and 2012 . But I think we have buried the ladder: if you installed Vimium, you can open links without using the mouse and without pressing the tab key over and over again. If you surf the web a lot, you probably use your keyboard for everything but clicking links. Now you can ignore the mouse for a few minutes.

Once you’ve installed the extension, just press the F key on the webpage and small keyboard shortcuts will appear above each link. To open a link of your choice, enter the appropriate shortcut. Or press Shift-F and the links will open in a new tab. And, unlike the DeadMouse extension, Vimium works with both image links and text links.

Vimium offers dozens of keyboard shortcuts for all kinds of actions, which is pretty cool, but most of them are just simpler replacements for existing keyboard shortcuts, like R for refresh and H for back to history. However, this one-link trick is deadly.
