The Gluten Project Is a Search Engine for Finding GFCO Certified Gluten-Free Products.

A good friend of mine has celiac disease, which means he can’t eat gluten. While “gluten-free” has for some reason become fashionable in recent years, it is a serious health problem for him, which makes going to a restaurant or grocery shopping a real challenge.

After a few years, things got much better, but in the early stages of diagnosis, he would have had to carefully check the packaging for almost everything. Although there are tons of products labeled “gluten-free,” the requirements for that label may mean that there is still enough gluten to cause problems for someone with celiac disease.

The Gluten Project is sort of a search engine for certified gluten-free foods that a friend of mine can actually eat. Everything in its 35,000 product database has been certified by the Gluten Free Certification Organization (GFCO).

With it, you simply enter what you are looking for (like any other search engine) and it returns results about what products exist. You can also click on several popular search items like pasta and beer to get immediate results.

For the most part, you’re just scrolling through the grocery list, so once you know what to buy, you still have to figure out where to buy it. Some products have links to where you can find them online, and the goal is to ensure that online shopping options eventually make up the majority, making the tool much more useful.

For someone recently diagnosed and still in the ¯ \ _ (ツ) _ / ¯ stage trying to figure out what to eat, this can be a reliable source to point you in the right direction.
