Donate Whenever Your Super Bowl Team Scores Points

Football is dangerous. You might want to enjoy the Super Bowl – for sports, snacks, or halftime shows – but you also really hate a lot of what the NFL or your team stands for. Chronic brain injuries, disrespect and disregard for peaceful protests, hiding domestic violence, supporting politicians you really hate. What should a fan do?

Throw money at the problem! No seriously.

In 2017, Patriots fans Josh Gondelman and Emma Sando felt quite controversial about their team. They were happy to see the team in the Super Bowl, but less worried that some players and executives had close ties to the Trump administration. They feared that watching the game would be a form of tacit support. So they decided to turn the game into explicit monetary support for the cause they believed in.

Gondelman and Sando decided to donate to charity every time their team scores, and they encouraged other fans to do the same with the hashtag #AGoodGame. (There is a lot of peer pressure.) Their (unscientific) end result was about $ 100,000 donated to various causes.

There’s a website this year with suggestions for charity and inspiration – including a list of charities that Colin Kaepernick is backing with his million dollar pledge – but where, how, and how much you want to donate is up to you. The main way is to choose a charity and set the dollar amount that you donate each time your team scores points, per touchdown or per point.

You can also get more creative by setting dollar amounts for various in-game events more like a drinking game – $ 3 for a touchdown, $ 5 for a tackle, or $ 1 for a yard run for your favorite player, etc. Let your heart go guide you:

Gondelman and Sando will analyze the hashtag after the game to calculate the final donations, but you can communicate your pledge on their website . This way you can enjoy the big game and do good while you are in it.
