Don’t Set an Alarm for Your Favorite Song

When you use your phone as an alarm clock, you might think you want to wake up to your favorite song. You do not. The first couple of days you will enjoy it, but then the effect will reverse. It won’t be “I wake up to my favorite song”, it will be “sometimes iTunes turns on my alarm.” Every time your old favorite song is played, you feel anxious or anxious.

If you switch to a different song, the cycle continues, leaving a trail of spoiled songs in its wake, and it will take months for you to regain the joy of those songs. (This also applies to ringtones.)

If you really want a custom alarm clock, try something ephemeral, a song you don’t usually listen to for fun, but that evokes memories, such as a commercial jingle or a video game theme. Or a song that you don’t usually listen to, but has some value for you.

But in reality, you shouldn’t find a musical alarm clock. The sound effects are good and hard to ruin; maybe play the sound of a zombie mob or a mysterious station with numbers . The Clock app for iOS includes a great bird song track hidden inside the bedtime feature. The singing of birds becomes quiet and increases with every second. This is a good way to wake up. And somehow it doesn’t make me hate birds.
