Save Money by Buying Group Plane Tickets Separately
Whenever a large group of friends and I are planning a big trip, I usually volunteer to buy plane tickets. Credit card points are serious business, and adding a few friends to my itinerary means they can take advantage of my airline status, whichever we choose. It always seemed obvious , except as Thrillist points out this week, I might have overpaid.
You know when you are looking for flights and you see the message “There are only two seats left for this price!” mark next to the price? If there are only two $ 99 seats left and you go to buy five tickets, you don’t get two for $ 99 and three for the regular price, you will most likely buy five tickets for the regular price and keep two tickets for $ 99. a table for someone to buy.
The reason is that most airlines treat your purchase as a sports ticket when they sell all five of you together. If they don’t have five cheaper tickets, they will by default sell you five more expensive tickets.
Miles can vary from airline to airline, but if you are buying a ticket for a large group, you are paying (literally) to see what price you can pay for tickets individually rather than as part of a large group. You can save some money by running this credit card multiple times instead of making one major purchase.
