Get Rid of Your Lazy Ass With an App Called Sluggard

macOS: Sometimes when I’ve been sitting at my desk for hours, I think about how sitting is killing us and how I should really take a break and go for a walk or workout. And then I get up, bring lunch to my table and continue to work.

There are apps that remind me to take a break, like TimeOut , but they always annoyed me. No, I do not want my computer to interfere with my work for five minutes when I was busy with something. But Sluggard is a little different. I like Sloth.

The sloth invites you to do an exercise. In the free version, you can choose two, which is why I said I love squats and crunches and that I am “average” fitness. I turned it on yesterday and an hour later he told me to do 8 squats. It only took a few seconds longer to do the squats than it did to click the dialog, so I did them. (You also have to decide if you are postponing or skipping this break, so doing squats is also easier than deciding if you say you wo n’t squat.)

The next prompt came when I was out for a walk (hooray for me), and another one after that when I was in a video meeting. So I missed one and missed one. And then in the afternoon, on two different occasions, he told me to do 6 crunches. Of course, why not. The crunches are done.

I like Sluggard because there is no waiting or any significant task switching here. If I’m writing a sentence, I can keep that thought in my head while doing 8 squats. I might end up pissed off by the pop-ups, but for now, I’m enjoying them.
