How to Use Instagram Filters Without Posting a Photo

Sometimes all it takes for a smartphone image to achieve perfection is a kiss from the Instagram X-Pro II filter. There is only one problem: to use this filter or any of the other filters in the app, you have to post your photo to Instagram.

Yes, there are hundreds of other photo editing apps you can use to transform your image. But Instagram is simple, and you’re probably used to it. Now How to Geek has figured out how to save your image with this awesome filter locally, without having to post to Instagram in the process. The key is your phone’s airplane mode.

For this to work, you go through the traditional Instagram posting process as usual. However, when you get to the last step, where you type in a succinct description and hit the Share button, you put your phone into airplane mode.

Instagram will try to post your photo, but won’t be able to do so due to the inclusion of airplane mode. But the image will be saved in your camera roll. From there, you should get a note stating that the post did not work, but Instagram will try to post it automatically whenever possible. Just cancel that download, take your phone out of airplane mode and you’re good to go.
