Last year, I finally got TSA PreCheck (and Global Access), a move that has revolutionized the way I travel. In San Francisco, the airport security line could sometimes take over an hour, which meant that I always had to get to the airport at least 2 hours early to make sure I got through. I didn’t “need” the TSA Pre, but it was a very welcome addition to my travels and is now available to five more airlines.

TSA Pre acceptance is done at the airline level and it is not as easy as making a check-in decision. Airlines must meet TSA security requirements and update their booking engine to sync with Secure Flight’s pre-checkout system. Therefore, not all airlines support the program. For example, earlier this year I was able to use TSA Pre flying from SFO to Italy on Lufthansa, but a few months later, when I went to Scotland for WOW, I had to go through traditional security at literally the same exits at the airport. …

If you travel frequently (or even several times a year), I highly recommend getting the TSA Pre. If you think you may be able to travel outside the United States multiple times, spend the extra money and gain access to the entire world that comes with TSA Pre. Global Entry has literally shortened the hours of my return to the US from overseas travel, and the havign TSA Pre makes getting started a lot less stressful.
