Where to Find Free Inspiration for Your Novel
How is NaNoWriMo progressing? Do you already have 20 percent of the novel on your hard drive? Otherwise, you may not be able to think of what to write. Fortunately, online nanowrimo.org there is a place where lots of ideas, ready to theft.
This is a forum called The Society of Adoption , so no, it’s not really stealing. People think about stories and put those they can’t use (or want to share) “for adoption.” As well as characters , plots , titles and more . You will need a free account on the NaNoWriMo website to view the forum, but I recommend it whether you complete the task this month or not. The adoption society is filled with orphan ideas that simply beg to find a home in your next piece of art.
Here are some of my favorites:
Accept a magical item – perhaps one of your characters could drink the Long Life Honey that keeps you from dying, but only if you toast someone else when you drink it. Or maybe someone can read (or try to write) the Book of Total Perspective, which describes the vastness of the universe so accurately that anyone who reads it becomes completely incapacitated.
Accept a Group of Losers – Does your romance need a group of couples, all dysfunctional, doing a task as part of therapy? Or perhaps your office romance takes place in the department of all the people who can’t be fired and who are the only ones around when the crisis hits.
Take In Space Filler / Quick Little Moment – One of your characters gets snacks and takes the rest of the squad on a detour for food. You can describe the food in as much detail as you like. Or your character stops stroking a stray dog. He follows him everywhere. Name the dog.
And if you’re having trouble naming these characters, losers, items, or even this cute dog, check out the Appellation Station forum, where procrastination writers are posted 24/7 giving out nicknames.
