This CDC App Tells You What Vaccines You Need to See the World
iOS / Google: Different countries around the world have unique products, styles and cultures, but they also have their own diseases. This is why it is so important to get vaccinated four to six weeks before international travel. If you’re preparing to travel around the world, the Centers for Disease Control’s TravWell app can help you prepare your immune system.
Available for iOS and Android, CDC TravWell gives you clear instructions on what you need, depending on where and when you are going. After downloading the app, you can build a trip that can include multiple destinations. TravWell will then provide you with vaccine requirements and recommendations for each seat, as well as a list of other things to do before you fly.
Let’s say, for example, you are planning a trip to Thailand. After you enter your travel dates, you will see four tabs. The first tab, CDC Vaccines & Medicines Advice, will recommend vaccines for hepatitis A, hepatitis B, Japanese encephalitis, rabies, typhoid fever, yellow fever, malaria, and cholera in addition to your regular shots. The next tab, To Do List, gives you a helpful, customizable checklist of things to do before and during your trip. You will see tips such as “See a doctor before you travel,” “Check in with the US Department of State,” “Provide an emergency route,” and “Use insect repellent.” The Packing List tab is a customizable checklist of medicines and medical supplies that you should pack and take with you on your travels. Finally, the Documents tab is where you can save and organize photos or scanned images of your important travel documents.
When you receive your vaccinations, TravWell allows you to keep records of them, as well as records of any medications you wish to track. You can even set in-app reminders to keep you updated on booster doses of vaccine or to contact you when it’s time to take certain medications while traveling. And best of all, TravWell works whether you are online or not. As long as you can plug your smartphone into a power source, you can access your notes and checklists, read CDC guidelines, and find emergency phone numbers wherever you are.
