You Can Use a Handkerchief As Gauze

Gauze is one of those things that I never have on hand and I have to buy again every time I want to make ricotta. While you can technically wash and reuse it, I’ve always found this task a little frustrating. (When I wash it by hand, it doesn’t get completely clean, but is completely washable in the wash.)

Luckily, The Kitchn has three gauze alternatives that you can use if you can’t find cheesecloths, one of which is a large handkerchief . I love this idea because they are pre-cut, very easy to clean, and quite inexpensive. They also have a very fine weave, making them a great choice for some softer cheeses. Of course, you need to make sure you have a dedicated storage area for your “kitchen handkerchiefs” so you don’t confuse them with handkerchiefs. (Although I’ve only ever seen old people blow their nose with handkerchiefs, so maybe this distinction isn’t necessary in your home.)
