Hide Nazis With This Twitter Setting

Twitter, the social network that vets Nazis , is required by law to hide Nazi content and symbols in Germany and France. You can take advantage of this without moving to Germany.

Twitter user Christa Peterson discovered that you can simply tell Twitter that you are in Germany and it will try to hide Nazi accounts and tweets:

Twitter lists these instructions on its support page , but does not mention that it can hide the Nazis this way. ( A separate page explains content retention.) Here’s how to do it:

1. On the Twitter homepage, click your avatar in the upper right corner.

2. Select “Settings & Privacy” from the drop-down menu.

3. In the third section “Content” change your country to Germany.

Now any new page will load with Germany content filters installed.

Of course, Twitter is terrible, it only hides some Nazis, but it’s better than nothing. Here is a comparison of the best results for the National Socialism profile before and after I changed my settings:

If you try to view the flagged account, you get the following:

The filter also applies to specific tagged tweets. Here is the conservative Christian writer and felony convict Dinesh D’Souza, who lied about the Holocaust before and after:

Your popular topics and language preferences will remain the same. It’s the same with the location displayed on your profile page. One bonus we noticed is that the Moments tab disappears.

As user CanolaYogurt points out , Twitter stores settings in your browser, not in your account. This way you can log into other accounts and you still get German filtering. But you will need to reapply the setting in every browser or computer you use.

Until I found this setting on the Twitter mobile app. Another reason to remove Twitter from your phone.
