Three Ingredient Happy Hour: Retro Grasshopper

Happy Friday my friends and welcome back to Happy Hour with 3 Ingredients , a weekly drinks column featuring super simple yet delicious libations. Today we end Retro Week with a completely kitsch proposal: a sweet green grasshopper.

Welcome to Retro Week , where we light up the flux condenser and introduce you to the 1950s know-how of everything from making casseroles to building fallout shelters to joys for kids to relax and play with trash.

The Grasshopper, which allegedly started its little cocktail life in New Orleans, is an after-dinner mint dessert cocktail that gained popularity in the 1950s and 60s. It not only tastes similar to the alcoholic mint of the Andes, but also softens the eyes due to its green tint. To make this drink, clearly reminiscent of a dessert, you will need:

  • 30 grams of green crème de ment
  • 30 grams of white crème de cocoa
  • 1 1/2 ounces of cream (I make mine with a little cream because I’m so decadent).

Pour everything into a cocktail shaker filled with ice – regular ice will do, or you can shake one large cube – and shake it until it’s too cold for your hand. If you shake it hard enough, you will have a little foam on top, so put in a little effort. Strain into a compartment glass and garnish with mint leaves or cocoa powder if desired.
