What Cookbooks Do You Need in Your Kitchen?

Hello and welcome back toWhat’s Cooking? , an open thread where you can share your brilliant thoughts, tips, recipes and opinions on all food related matters. This week I want to share all of your favorite cookbooks.

There are many recipes to be found on the Internet these days, but for me, nothing replaces cookbooks. It’s not just the recipes; There is something reassuring about holding a hefty food book (my favorite subject) in your hand and slowly flipping through the pages. It has always seemed to me that cookbooks are more than just instructions. While recipes are an important part, a cookbook can serve as a history textbook, a brilliant art book, or just plain fun. Naturally, I want to hear all about your pets, and I have a few questions to start with:

  • What was your very first cookbook? My grandmother gave me a Fannie Farmer Junior cookbook when I was about seven years old, but I don’t think I have ever cooked anything out of it. I remember there was a recipe for mayonnaise and it seemed strange to me.
  • Which cookbook first interested you in cooking? How to Become a Home Goddess by Nigella Lawson was the first text to ever thrill me about baking and cooking in general. It was so warm and cozy and fun and making chocolate lava cakes made me feel like a goddess.
  • Have you bought any good ones lately? The newest addition to my family is BraveTart: Iconic American Desserts , and I’m currently trying to decide whether to make homemade Oreos or homemade miracle bread.
  • What’s the strangest cookbook you have? My sister gave me this little number a few Christmas ago, but I haven’t made the rivet muffins yet.
  • Have you ever bought a new cookbook just to find out that it is really very useful? Geek’s Cooking Class by Jeff Potter is the perfect balance between entertaining, silly, and informative.
  • What’s your favorite baking book? I am currently unable to pick a favorite.
  • What’s your favorite non-technical cookbook cookbook? This is mine .

As always, feel free to leave comments that are not a direct response to any of the above. I just want to hear about cookbooks. I really like cookbooks.
