Happy Hour With 3 Ingredients: G&T Lime Leaf

Happy (much needed) weekend and welcome back to Happy 3 Ingredient Hour , a weekly drinks column featuring super simple yet delicious libations. This week we’re making some minor adjustments to our favorite gin and tonic.

To make a really good G&T, you really only need two ingredients: a really good gin and a really good tonic. A fizzy drink is usually garnished with a lime wedge, but we’re going to go a step further and use a lime leaf .

If you are not familiar with the Makrut lime leaf, it is very fresh, intensely aromatic and slightly citrusy. It is widely used in Southeast Asian foods, so you can recognize the flavor of Thai, Cambodian or Lao cuisine. Unlike other leaves , they add a ton of noticeable aroma pretty quickly, and shaking them with a little gin is enough to extract good flavor from them. To make this green drink you will need:

  • 1 1/2 ounce London dry gin
  • 2 leaves Makrut lime leaves (one to shake and one to garnish)
  • A good tonic like Fever Tree

Add gin and one leaf to a shaker filled with ice and shake until cool. Strain into a low bowl over a large cube and garnish with a second sheet.
