The Next IPhone May Let You Face Unlock, Which Is Silly

Apple’s upcoming iPhone 8 will likely let you unlock it with facial recognition, and security experts tell Mashable it’s a terrible idea . Modern facial recognition technology like the one used in the Samsung Galaxy S8 can be fooled by photography . Samsung pretends it’s okay, but this trick creates a false sense of security that many consumers are not even aware of.

It gets worse. If Apple turns on non-touch facial recognition, as rumor has it, it could mean the device is always watching, just as Siri is always listening, creating another potential security hole that could turn the iPhone into a great spy device for hackers.

There are also some concerns about tech giants creating databases of all faces, but we crossed that bridge many years ago. Google, Apple and Facebook will recognize faces in your photos. Snapchat doesn’t recognize specific faces , but the moment they want, they’ll have millions of willing members. As facial recognition helps marketers target their ads , technology is slowly invading public spaces, and there is little we can do about it other than using exotic makeup samples .

But at least we can not rely on facial recognition as a safety measure. Phone makers are so insane that they will continue to offer more secure (albeit imperfect) options like fingerprint recognition and passcodes. Keep using them. Your face is too public to be your password.
