What You Need to Know Before Switching to a Cheaper Tariff Plan

This month we brought you down to a cost that many people overpay: mobile phone maintenance. However, before you make the switch, there are a few more factors to consider besides cost.

While discounted carriers and plans may offer the same basic services for free, in some cases there are restrictions that may not cost you. For example, many discounted carriers like Ting and Republic Wireless use Sprint and T-Mobile networks.

And while some people don’t have issues with Sprint or T-Mobile, these networks aren’t exactly known for their excellent coverage. Sure, you will save money, but if you have a bad reception in your home or when traveling, it may not be worth it.

In other words, value isn’t just about price. So when you research new phone plans this month, keep the following in mind:

Coverage: Most carriers offer some sort of coverage map that shows you what you can expect from a service. Look also for reviews of the service on the Internet (in particular, reviews in your city). Other clients may tell you if they have any problems.

Data Usage: Most plans, even the major carriers, offer minutes and text messaging at a relatively low cost. You usually pay a small amount each month for unlimited service. The data is what increases our bill, so make sure you are comparing apples to apples before upgrading to a cheaper plan. Does the plan offer enough data based on your average usage? And how much more will you have to pay if you exceed this amount?

Phone Compatibility : Some carriers may not be compatible with your current phone, so you should look into this too. If you have to buy a new phone to switch to it, it will offset your savings.

Overseas use: Finally, what is the charge for using your phone in a foreign country (and do they offer that option at all)? Different carriers have different ways to charge you. Verizon, for example, will let you use your phone and service overseas, but it will cost you $ 10 a day.

These are the main areas you want to consider, but be sure to fully explore your options before moving on to another option. Basically, you just want to make sure you’re really paying less for the same tier or service (or at least make sure you’re okay with any restrictions). Sites like WhistleOut ,Wirefly, or NerdWallet are great places to start your exploration.
