August Money: Find a Cheaper Plan

This year we threw you all sorts of money problems, from bargaining to saving for retirement , and you have been solving them all year. This month we want to help you save on a certain expense: your mobile phone bill.

In August, we suggest you find a cheaper mobile data plan with the same service level. While many major carriers like Sprint and Verizon have started offering their own discount options, there are many non-contract pay-as-you-go plans. In fact, many of these discount carriers have forced the big players to offer better prices , so there are options.

Despite the fact that contract plans with major carriers offer some of the worst deals, many people still overpay for telephone services.

If you’ve been thinking about a cheaper plan but haven’t gotten around to it, this month’s challenge is for you.

Here are some of the options and guides we’ve written to help you get started:

First, figure out how you are using. How many minutes and texts do you use each month? How much data are you using? This will help you compare apples to apples. Then use sites like WhistleOut ,Wirefly, or NerdWallet to compare your options.

Make sure you know the details of your new plan and you like the network and speed as well. Are you in business? If so, please let us know how much you are currently paying and how much you think you will save each month by switching.
