What Strange Kitchen Appliances Are There For?

Hello and welcome back toWhat’s Cooking? , an open thread where you can share all your brilliant thoughts, tips, recipes and opinions on all food related matters. Today I want to inquire about your favorite weird but essential kitchen utensils, even if they are – ah – disposable .

In the world of kitchen appliances, there are obvious “workhorses” – objects without which I cannot (and should not) live. These include my stick blender , my giant wooden spoon, my cast iron skillet, and (shockingly) mydip circulators (all three). But there are also obligatory surprises, real heroes that I never expected. Then there is my Tovolo Scoop & Spread multipurpose spreader .

While it looks like a humble little spatula, this thing is much larger. At one end, you have a stiff nylon scraper spreader that, you guessed it, cleans and spreads very well. But the other end is absolutely necessary, the end of the silicone spatula. Not only is it great for cooking eggs, but it can drain from any jar, bottle, frying pan or bowl to the last drop. It is also a very useful coating tool as nothing sticks to it. I say this is one of my favorite things.

So now I want to hear from you! What strange kitchen tool caught your heart by surprise? Do you have disposable appliances that you refuse? Is there a tool more useful than a large wooden spoon? Anyone else have a collection of wooden spoons? Can we start a club with a wooden spoon?
