Chill This Summer With Alcoholic Candies

Sure, ice cocktails and frozen drinks can be great in hot weather, but alcoholic frozen ice fizzy is really needed in summer.

I spend many weekends at Dolores Park in San Francisco. The park is a meeting place for locals on weekends, and I enjoy gathering there with friends for Saturday picnics and a beer. For some reason, this is a place where law enforcement doesn’t seem to mind if you drink, and since it’s a very popular place, it’s suitable for a number of … entrepreneurs trying to make a quick buck selling things like pizza. snacks and of course drinks. My favorite salesperson is the guy who sells fresh coconuts. He cuts the top off and asks you for a drink while he cuts the top off the next client. He then refills your coconut with rum to compensate for the loss of juice. At $ 15 apiece, this is the best game in town.

And last week I met a guy selling frozen ice rose hips cocktails. Pure genius .

He sold them in different flavors for $ 8 apiece. It was too expensive in my opinion for the ice candy you buy from a stranger in the park, but it was inspiring. I ordered a pack of beverage bags on my phone from Amazon while we were still at the park (after figuring out that this is indeed something you can buy) and made my first batch of margaritas on Tuesday when they arrived.

As a child, I loved ice flakes. The alcoholic candies sounded like a dream.

To make your own cocktail, you simply whip up your favorite cocktail, pour it into bags and freeze it. Since alcohol has a lower freezing point than regular fruit juice, you need to pay attention to the overall strength of your creation. Treats with a very high alcohol content just won’t freeze.

Claire did a great job explaining how to improve the recipe in her post last year about making drunk popsicles , which is also a great idea.

I used to make popsicles, but the problem is they just don’t transport well. It’s great to take them out for a treat at home, but if you want to bring them to a party or to the park, you need to worry about getting the forms ready after everyone is ready. They also take up a significant amount of freezer space as you cannot put them on their side early because they will leak all over the place. You are also limited by the number of forms you have. If you only have a six-petal shape, then you only make six popsicles at a time.

With ice, I could make hundreds at a time if I wanted to, and they can sit pretty much anywhere I can place them in my cramped freezer. Since these are essentially just cheap plastic bags, I can also throw them away (although you can certainly wash and reuse them), so I don’t have to hang over my friends and make sure no pieces are lost during use. mold.

My 100 ice packs were only $ 9 and came with a funnel to fill them (which I found very helpful) and a recipe book with instructions on how to make my own. There is a zip lock built into the top to seal them when full, and slightly below if you want to rip off the elementary school style top to enjoy them. All recipes in the accompanying book also had an alcoholic version. It’s clear that this idea didn’t come to my mind in the park.

The book also made another weird suggestion: just stuff the bags with zip locks. I tried it and found it a little awkward with a full size sandwich bag. I would have thought this might work for a bag the size of a snack. It really inspired me to fill a Tupperware container with margarita. I made him too drunk to freeze completely, so I ended up with the consistency of a snow cone. On a hot day, I can definitely see myself digging into this with a spoon.
